Creative Critical Reflection:
If we talk about social groups, our music video highlights Punjabi and Desi community, showcasing their traditions, culture, and way of life. our music video have features of everyday life scenes from a village and urban settings. The music video likely showcases aspects of traditional Punjabi life, such as specific clothing salwar kameez, and cultural rituals. these elements symbolize the strength and pride of the Punjabi and Desi communities. The way we framed these aspects reflects how the community holds onto its traditions, even as it adapts to modern influences. My music video for Do Pall portrays several significant social issues as well, that resonate within the Punjabi and Desi communities.
Among the dominant themes is the conflict between tradition and modernity, particularly as young generations struggle to balance individual ambitions against family and cultural expectations, The question here concerns how cultural practices, beliefs, and values are transmitted to succeeding generations, and how young people struggle to either accept or reject these values. The video also touches on gender roles, where women in the community deal with societal pressures and struggle for empowerment, independence, and the ability to make their own decisions. video depicts women in empowered roles, whether in love, career, or personal independence, it is a reflection of a social issue around women's rights and freedom from societal expectations. Moreover, the video speaks on the topic of mental health, showing the inner turmoil others experience in silence because of cultural stigma.
Through such themes, the video highlights the emotional burden of social norms and the tension between upholding family honor and seeking personal happiness. In our music video for Desi core and culture, we intentionally incorporated different production elements to develop a strong sense of branding that captures the spirit of Desi heritage. The visual look, such as bright colors, cultural patterns, and luxurious textures in the set, costumes, and props, created a visual identity that is firmly based on Desi culture. We used cultural symbols such as traditional instruments, cultural motifs, and natural materials such as spices and flowers to amplify authenticity. The actual music, with Desi sounds and contemporary beats blended, itself added to the branding by providing a fusion that honors heritage as well as contemporary evolution. Fashion and styling were important, with artists wearing traditional clothes such as sarees and kurta-pajamas, with contemporary accessories to emphasize tradition-meets-modernity. The storytelling of the video, on themes of family, community, and celebration, resonated on an emotional level with the viewer, in line with the brand belief of safeguarding and upholding Desi culture. In addition, the rich, warm color grading and cinematic options added visual appeal, as well as to reinforce cultural connections through grandeur and intimacy in the shots. During the production, all aspects were chosen to be consistent with the brand's message of celebrating Desi culture, combining authenticity with contemporary relevance. This singular approach offered a unique, experiential brand experience embracing the richness and loveliness of Desi heritage in making it both appealing and relevant to an extensive market base. In its cultural contexts, the video touches Punjabi and Desi diaspora audiences across homeland as well as foreign settlements. Rich with colorful pictures, cultural costumes, and cultural insignia, the video underlines the heritage and pride in Punjabi culture.
Aspects such as folk music, bhangra, and rural landscapes commemorate the richness of the culture, evoking a feeling of nostalgia and attachment to one's heritage. This reflection of culture builds a strong connection and sense of pride among those who find these aspects representative of themselves. The video also stimulates social conversations around themes such as generational conflict and what society expects. Most viewers will identify with the challenges of the characters, particularly in the face of family pressure or changing roles of women within conventional communities. These depictions can prompt discussions regarding how cultural expectations influence personal decisions and relationships. In addition, audiences are engaging on social media and community sharing, where they can create content from the video—whether through dancing to the song, making reaction videos, or just talking about its themes. This online engagement widens the reach of the video and enables fans to experience themselves as part of a wider cultural conversation.
In total, Do Pall provides a complex experience for viewers through a combination of emotion, culture, and social commentary, creating personal connections as well as broader community conversations.
I used my research on the Do Pall music video to guide my approach to the product, enabling me to employ and subvert conventions typically present in Punjabi and Desi music videos.
Secondly, cultural symbols and themes were used in a way that helped the video conform to traditional expectations.
Traditions such as bright colors, traditional attire, and dance styles like bhangra are synonymous with Punjabi music videos and establish a very strong cultural link.
we did challenge conventions as well by fusing these conventional elements with contemporary, urban settings, showing how Punjabi identity is changing. This blend of rural and urban environments gives the genre a new spin, appealing to younger generations as well as the diaspora of the world. The storyline of the video also has an important role in breaking conventions. While most conventional Punjabi music videos are centered around love, family, or celebration, I used more mature social themes like generational conflict and balancing cultural heritage with individual ambitions. This provides the video with depth, going beyond straightforward storytelling to discuss real-life problems many viewers can identify with, particularly in the context of the Punjabi community. Further, I tried to challenge regular stereotypes of the way gender roles are presented. In many Desi music videos, women are typically depicted in passive or submissive roles, but there are women in powerful roles in my video who make autonomous decisions and freely reveal their feelings. This defies expectations and encourages a more positive representation of the role of women in society.
Visuals-wise, I experimented with the conventional Punjabi music video looks. Rather than depending completely on flashy, showy imagery, I applied a more close and cinematic look with subtle lighting and close-ups, capturing raw emotions. With this choice, the video would come across as more personal and real, more than the generic fast-paced, shiny visuals.
Musically, I opted to play around with genre blending, mixing traditional Punjabi instruments with contemporary beats. This contemporary approach defies the traditional application of purely folk-based music, providing a wider appeal to listeners from other genres.
my study enabled me to mix traditional and contemporary elements, producing a music video that respects cultural norms and presents new views. By breaking these terms of narrative, visual aesthetic, gender portrayal, and music, I hoped to provide an innovative and engaging experience for viewers.
